Rivendell began and is still 95 percent an us-to-you business, with no dealer in the mix. It's a good way to sell speciality, high-end goods that are far off the mainstream and often require more expertise and passion than a typical bike shop, spread so thin over so many brands, can muster.
But these dealers know the score.
We don't want our bikes presented as charming throw-backs, yet that's how typical bike shop would present them. We don't make homage-to-the-past bikes. We make all metal, mechanical, muscle-powered bicycles that are relevant now and will never be made obsolete or irrelevant by another round of technological uptics.
Our focus both limits the number of dealers who'd be interested in our bikes, and, frankly, the number of dealers we can entrust with selling these bikes. So we make sure they're well-informed, but always keep our fingers crossed. They are supposed to size you the same way we do. We vet them and do our best to keep them informed, but we don't control them. They are independent.
Sometimes we're asked: Do I buy from the Rivendell dealer in town, or direct, from you? Buy from whoever helped you the most in person or on the phone. Or spread it around, if they helped and we did, too. If you find out about the bikes at one of our few dealer shops, and you take up their time and test ride their bike, buy from them.
If you find out about a bike from us and your dealer doesn't have it and won't order it, get it from us. If they don't have it but can order it, get it from them.
Buy from helpers.
